Salami: how to keep a record and return it

Give one trusted person the salami ledger for each function and have them record every envelope and gift as it is received: who, which family, which function, cash amount or gift. After the wedding, close the ledger and keep a copy: these are returned at the givers’ own family weddings.

On the day

  • One trusted person records every envelope as it is received.
  • Write the name as the family knows it (for example “Tariq chacha, Dadhyal”), the function and the amount. For gifts, write what it was.
  • Keep new notes in labelled envelopes per function for the salami you give.

Afterwards

Export it: you will return these at their families’ weddings.

In Shaadi Hisab, mark each entry “returned” when you return it at their family’s wedding, so the list of what is still owed stays short.

Is salami restricted by law?

Salami and neundra are not “presents” under the Act (s.2).

Questions

How much salami should we give?

We found no reliable published figure for typical salami amounts, so we do not suggest one. Families usually return at least what they received.

Can several people record salami at once?

Yes. Share your plan with family members; each phone adds entries and they merge into one ledger.
